Go Natural Multisport - The Wrap
Multisport action returned to the Ku-ring-gai National Park on the 19th August for the 5th edition of the Go Natural Multisport. The chill of early
morning registration quickly subsided to reveal a gorgeous, spring day - perfect conditions for racing. One notable absentee from the start line was
Jarad Kohlar, one of Australia's most successful adventure race and multi sport athletes. Jarad has dominated the Go Natural since the inaugural event
back in 2005. With Jarad unavailable to race, the day would reveal a new champion in the male solo classifications.
Toby Wallace set the early pace with a blistering ride and a 2 minute lead heading into the water. He was followed by Liam Delany and Richard
Mountstephens who recorded similar times on the bike. Organisers were expecting record times on the bike leg due to a newly laid bitumen surface
stretching all the way to West Head.
In the women's event it was Jo Hume who took full advantage of the surface recording an impressive time of 0:56:46, almost 5 minutes ahead of 2008
champion Melinda Pelly. With kayak olympian Yanda Nossiter in the ranks, the girls had to take full advantage before hitting the water in the paddle leg.
In a cruel twist of fate, Wallace leading the field on the water lost his way in the early morning fog and nearly paddled up Smith's Creek. Luckily the
volunteer coastal patrol was on hand to direct him to Apple Tree Bay without losing too much ground on the chase group. At the conclusion of the paddle
leg it was veteran adventure racer Hugh Stodart and Nossiter recording the fastest times on the water in the solo categories. The relay teams were
not to be left out with the top four male teams all recording sub one hour times on the paddle leg, lead by the ever present Matt Blundell.
The run leg is widely regarded as the one that will "make or break" your race. Strong trail runners can normally assert themselves in the final leg
while many competitors comment on the technical and hilly nature of the run with a tendency to "rip your legs off".
This was the case for Wallace as Liam Delany, veteran Hugh Stodart and Richard Mountstephens took control of the race. In the end it was Delany who
prevailed with a 1:06:57 on the run leg, crossing the line in first place with an overall time of 3:08:15. Delany continues the Victorian stronghold on
this event. Second place went to Hugh Stodart who closed the gap to within 41 seconds of Delany. Richard Mountstephens rounded off the podium with an
impressive 3:12:59
In the female solos it was Yanda Nossiter who showed her versatility by overtaking Melinda Pelly on the run leg and taking line honours in a time of 3:35:09.
Melinda held on to take second amidst a late charge from Jo Hume who recorded an impressive 1:18:36 on the run. The relay category also produced an upset
when team "Up The Creek" reduced regular winners "Millie Prokayaks" to second place. To be fair, Matt Blundell had to cover the paddle and run leg after
their runner made a late withdrawal due to illness.
Congratulations to all participants for taking on and completing the Go Natural Multisport. The event will be back next year on the 14th August 2010.
