The BMC 100KM Classic was held at The Wombat State Forest, Woodend on the 20th April 2008 in perfect conditions. The whole mood of the day was great and it began with a nice fresh morning offering the clearest of blue skies so we all began to realize we were in for a thriller day out on the saddle.

The 100km riders started at a nice and & early time of 7am and it was predicted they would take just over 4 hours to complete the 100km circuit. One rider already had come to grief early in which called the Ambulance in early to retrieve him so it came as a little bit of a wake up call. The 50km riders had a bit more of a sleep in and they all kicked off at 9am followed by the Junior Category not long after.

The tracks were absolutely magnificent to be completely honest. I had heard great things about the tracks out in the Wombat but I’d never really thought it through. The single track sections were defiantly the highlight of the day. Everything seemed to flow and link up from one another which is exactly what I was after. The finish of the race involved riding around a small lake, over a bridge and around to the finish line which made for an atmospheric finish.

The Junior Category were first to come into sight of the finish line, it came apparent that the faster riders had however caught the back end of the 50km field so the tussle for honors in the race came out to who could fight through those riders the quickest. James Butler came across the finish line first less than one and half minutes ahead of Andrew Day & Marcus Jolly for third.

The 50km race ranged from all sorts of riding capabilities and skills from the everyday punter to the series ones. It was a great mood and you could tell everyone was there to have fun during the race and not take it “too’ seriously but still enough to have a great time. Peter Hatton was first to cross the line in a time of 2 hours 23 minutes 7 minutes ahead of Hayden Lebbink & Neville Bird for third. Everyone was rewarded at the end of their ride with a nice cold beer to top off a great ride which was generous of them!

This was the race everyone’s eyes were peeled for, the 100km and looking at the times at the 40km split we all began to realize how close the finish was going to be. At just past 11:20am, the first 100km came into site and it was not only but Murray Spink who had lead the field into the first 40km. He came across the finish line only 1 minute 30 ahead of Shaun Lewis and Brett Anderson a further 3 minutes behind.

Overall, what a fantastic day. The tracks were great, the event was great and most of all everyone had an absolute awesome day! Massive thanks to Max Adventure for running the event which turned out to be a thriller day in the saddle after all.
