2009 BMC 100km Classic - Results and Photos

Cloudy conditions and a slight drizzle greeted the competitors as they lined up at the start for the second edition of the popular BMC 100km Classic. With an increased field of 1200 riders, almost 40% up from last year - the pace was expected to be hot!

By popular demand the course was also changed to give the riders the opportunity to complete the demanding pines loop in the first 50km. This is generally regarded as the tougher and more arduous section of the course. In the end, the change didn't reduce race times as most riders were expecting. In contrast, times were generally slower compared to 2008, although this can be attributed to the increased number of single track sections that was introduced this year.

Over the 100km course it was a two horse race between Clarence Street Cyclery's Matthew Flemming and National 24hr Solo Champion Jason English. In the end Flemming proved to be the stronger rider on the day taking out the BMC 100km Classic in a time of 4h38:17. In the female elite category the honours went to Tory Thomas in a time of 5h28:55. Second place went to Jo Bennett in a time of 5h34:39. Remarkably, Tory was suffering with an illness in the weeks leading up to the event and there was some doubt if she was going to make it to the start line. Just shows you what remarkable athletes these girls are!!

In the 50km event line honours went to Bradley Morton from Kaleen in a time of 2h31:58. Christy Harris from Burnley was the first female across the line in a time 3h11:56.

Congratulations to all the category place getters and all the competitors who took on the angry wombat! We hope to see you again in 2010.
