The Adventure Paddle events will be taking a break in 2011, please check back at the end of 2011 for further details.

25th March 2010:

Max Adventure Paddle - The Wonny

Known affectionately as the Wonny to locals, the Woronora River played host to this years Max Adventure Paddle. With the closing weekend of summer set the scene for over 100 paddlers to put themselves through the 3 hr paddle rogaine type event and in the process collected over $3000 worth of prizes supplied by Prokayaks Narrabeen, Kayaks Australia Taren Point, Q Kayaks Ingleburn and SleepMonsters.com.au (the adventure racing website).

The day turned out perfect, high tide greeted the competitors and clear skies, the start was located at Burnum Burnum reserve under the Woronora bridge and was situated mid course with 340points north and 280points south of the start. Competitors had to chose carefully, as they weren't required to go to the giveout at Prince Edward Park 1500m upstream they could opt for the northern route strait away, heading upstream first would mean an outgoing tide to battle against coming home. The majority chose the latter and then opted for a short run up into Woronora Heights and CP 11 and 12, this little detour added about 25mins to the course and meant less paddling time, Matt Acheson eventual overall winner and only person to clear the course stuck with Pete Tedesco and Paul Dreghorn and went via 13 and then up to the needles picking up 11 and 12 on the way home, which unfortunately brought the doubles team unstuck, these crews then headed out into the Georges River for the other end of the course, thankfully the mud that had plagued course setter was deep below the tide and never became and issue, thick mangroves did prove hard to negotiate when 1 crew decided they could possibly pick up a couple of CPs by walking along the shore. This task certainly wasn't for the fainthearted. In the supplied craft the majority opted for the upstream checkpoints full credit has to go to 2 particular teams for their pure tenacity in giving it a go, girls team Maniacal and mixed team First Timers, both crews went the value for money option and put in everything they had, and then losing most of what they had 1 team mate included.

At the end of the day a great day was had by all, sponsors Prokayaks Narrabeen, Kayaks Australia Taren Point, Q Kayaks Ingleburn and SleepMonsters.com.au had some great prizes on offer, Max Adventure put on a great day and with the support of Sutherland Canoe Club no one went hungry.

A big thank you to all those smiling faces out there, it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and we look forward to seeing you all again. If anyone out there has a venue they think may work let us know, or any suggestions please drop me an email via steve@sleepmonsters.com.au
